Isn't it curious how many of the biggest donors to the GOP turn out the be the biggest crooks? Enron, Haliburton, and Jack Abramoff come to mind, but I'll bet there's a long list somewhere.

Quote:
The Securities and Exchange Commission has accused two Texas businessmen who are major Republican Party donors of securities fraud and insider trading from which they took in more than $550 million.

The SEC complaint accused brothers Samuel and Charles Wyly of using foreign fronts to trade stock in companies on whose boards they sat.

They “created an elaborate sham system of trusts and subsidiary companies in the Isle of Man and the Cayman Islands to sell more than $750 million worth of stock” in four companies: Michaels Stores Inc., Sterling Software Inc., Sterling Commerce Inc., and Scottish Annuity & Life Holdings Ltd. (now known as Scottish Re Group Limited), without disclosing their insider status as required, the SEC said in its civil lawsuit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in New York.

The lawsuit – the result of more than six years of investigation - seeks the return of more than $31.7 million in profits off the sale of Sterling Software and fines.

Also charged in the complaint were their attorney, Michael C. French, and their stockbroker, Louis J. Schaufele III.

An attorney for the Wylys, William Brewer III, called the SEC's complaint "a misapplication of the law. At worst, the claims appear to represent an after-the-fact justification for a misguided six-year investigation.”

He said the Wylys "intend to vigorously defend themselves – and expect to be fully vindicated.”

The Wylys and their wives have contributed nearly $2.5 million to GOP candidates and committees over the past 20 years, most notably former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Good Old SEC. Wasting taxpayer money on an imaginary witch hunt. Too bad they seem to be unable to take care of the day to day business they are charge with doing.

How convenient these charges are, coming only days after the Dodd-Frank wall of secrecy has been dropped around the SEC, leaving both observers and defendants unable to access any information about this case beyond that which the SEC chooses to make known (information which, thanks to that secrecy, is of highly dubious factual content to begin with).

I suppose we ought to thankful that SEC trials themselves aren't conducted in secret as well, but a) who knows how soon that's coming, and b) US government agencies operating in secret against US citizens ought to be utterly anathema.

But, of course, the Dems only oppose that when the targets are foreign terrorists. Decent, law-abiding citizens are fair game for the Shadow Government.

As compared to what, the writhing sewer of democratic corruption?

Financier Gets 12 Years for Stealing $292 Million
By COLIN MOYNIHAN

A Park Avenue financier and political donor who pleaded guilty to stealing $292 million from three banks in a Ponzi scheme was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in prison.

The financier, Hassan Nemazee, who had donated to philanthropic causes and given money to Democrats like Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry, listened quietly as Judge Sidney H. Stein of Federal District Court in Manhattan admonished him.

Jeffrey Epstein may face child trafficking probe

Last Updated: 8:44 AM, July 31, 2010

The Feds may not be quite done with Jeffrey Epstein. Having just completed 13 months in a Florida jail for soliciting prostitution from a minor, he now might be under investigation for other possible crimes, including whether there's any evidence of child trafficking, reports The Daily Beast. Epstein has settled several lawsuits by teens who say they were lured to his Palm Beach mansion for massages or sex. The US attorney general in Florida wouldn't comment. Epstein's lawyer, Jack Goldberger, says he knew nothing of any probe and, "There are not and should not be any pending criminal investigations."

DEMOCRAT SEX OFFENDER
Most people haven't heard of Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire sex-offender, with close ties to former President Bill Clinton, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, and members of the Obama Administration. But after July 21, folks may be hearing more from him. That's when his year-long probation -- after he pleaded guilty to state charges arising from sexually charged massages and sex in exchange for money with under-age females -- comes to an end.

Back in 2007 and 2008 when the Epstein-sex-abuse scandal broke, Democrats who at one time couldn't move fast enough to get close to him, were running scared. Clinton, who famously traveled with Epstein to Africa, and Epstein friend, Obama economic adviser and former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who sought tens of millions from Epstein for the university, would not comment on the relationship. Bill Richardson and then-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer returned political donations.

Over the past 20 years, the Wylys gave nearly $2.5 million to 192 top Republicans, including both Presidents Bush, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Phil Gramm, Dick Armey, John Cornyn, John McCain, Sam Brownback, Judd Gregg, John Thune, and Kit Bond, plus various GOP committees, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. So far, the only person to publicly return the money was John McCain, who gave back $20,000 in 2006 when he learned the Wylys were under investigation.

The rest have yet to make a decision.

I just cannot comprehend how you dems think. You started this thread about corrupt political donors, Don and Waymore post examples how this happens on both sides of the aisle and then you come back saying they are deflecting and are now off topic.

So I guess in your eyes the only bad people are republicans and dems, no matter how scummy or low they may be, they’re OK cuz they’re dems.

Thread is about GOP donors. If don and wayfuck want to make a thread about liberal donors, by all means, they can make that thread.
